  • job interview is a process in which a potential employee is evaluated by an employer for prospective employment in their company, organization, or firm. During this process, the employer hopes to determine whether or not the applicant is suitable for the role.

Always Follow These Basic Standards....
  • Don't overcrowd your resume; allow for plenty of white space.
  • Keep your resume to one page whenever possible.
  • Keep the number of fonts you use to a minimum -- two at the most.
  • Use a font that is easy to read. Times Roman works well.
  • Do not justify the lines of type on your resume. Allow the right side of the page to "rag."
  • Do not overuse capitalization, italics, underlines, or other emphasizing features.
  • Make sure your name, address, and a phone number appear on your resume and all correspondence, preferably at the top of the page.
  • Print your resume on white or cream paper using a good-quality printer.
  • Second- and third-generation photocopies must be avoided
  • Print on one side of the paper only.

  • Don't use words with which you aren't familiar.
  • Use a dictionary as you write.
  • Perform a spell check on your finished resume.
  • Carefully read every word in your resume.
  • Have a friend or two proof read your resume for you.PUNCTUATION MISTAKES :
    Things to look for :
    • Periods at the end of all full sentences.
    • Be consistent in your use of punctuation.
    • Always put periods and commas within quotation marks.
    • Avoid using exclamation points.
    GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES :
    Grammar hang-ups to watch for:
    • The duties you currently perform should be in present tense (i.e., write reports)
    • Duties you may have performed at past jobs should be in past tense (i.e., wrote reports).
    • Capitalize all proper nouns.
    • When expressing numbers, write out all numbers between one and nine (i.e., one, five, seven), but
    • use numerals for all numbers 10 and above (i.e., 10, 25, 108).
    • If you begin a sentence with a numeral, spell out that numeral (e.g. Eleven service awards won while employed.).
    • Make sure your date formats are consistent (i.e.11/22/01 or Nov. 22, 2001, or 11.22.01. Choose one and stick with it.).
    Choose Your Words Carefully :
    Phrase yourself well:
    • Be on the lookout for the following easily confused words:
    • accept (to receive), except (to exclude)
    • all right (correct), alright (this is not a word)
    • affect (to bring about change), effect (result)
    • personal (private), personnel (staff members)
    • role (a character assigned or a function), roll (to revolve).
    • Use action words (i.e., wrote reports, increased revenues, directed staff).

    REFERENCES:

    In most instances it is not necessary to include names and address of references on the resume. If you include a reference, make it sure that the referenced person knows very well about you. It is also advisable to add the persons as references, whom the employer can contact easily. If possible add the phone number and e-mail ID of the reference. Never add a person as a reference, about whom you know nothing

    STICK TO THE POINT :

    Employers have a busy schedule, so don't expect them to read through a long resume. Ideally, resumes should be of one page, or of two pages only if absolutely necessary, to describe relevant work experience.

    WORDS COUNT :

    Use of language is extremely important; you need to sell yourself to an employer quickly and efficiently. Address your potential employer's needs with a clearly written, compelling resume. Avoid large paragraphs (five or six lines). If you provide small, digestible pieces of information, your resume will be read. Use action verbs. Verbs such as "developed", "managed", and "designed" emphasise your accomplishments. Don't use declarative sentences like "I developed the ..." or "I assisted in ...", leave out the "I". Avoid passive constructions, such as "was responsible for managing". Just say, "managed": that sounds stronger and more active.

    MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR EXPERIENCE :

    Employers need to know what you have accomplished to have an idea of what you can do for them. Don't be vague. Telling someone that you "improved the company's efficiency" doesn't say much. But if you say that you "cut overhead costs by 20 per cent and saved the company Rs 20 lakh during the last fiscal year", you are more specific.

    HONESTY IS A GOOD POLICY :

    Employers will feel more comfortable hiring you if they can verify your accomplishments. There is a difference between making the most of your experience and exaggerating or falsifying it. A falsified resume can cost you the job later.

    DOUBLE-CHECK FOR MISTAKES :

    Check your resume for correct grammar and spelling - evidence of good communication skills and attention to detail. Nothing can ruin your chances of getting a job faster than submitting a resume filled with preventable mistakes. Make your resume easy on the eye. Use normal margins (1" on the top and bottom, 1.25" on the sides) and don't cram your text on the page. Allow for some space between the different sections. Avoid unusual or exotic fonts. Preferred fonts: Arial and Times Roman.

Telephone Interview Tips

Telephone screening interviews are becoming more commonplace as companies seek to cut hiring costs and streamline the selection process.
Phone interviewing is unique. You can't count on visual stimuli such as good looks or power suits, eye contact or body language, to aid your presentation. Neither can you rely on visual signals to interpret the interviewer's response. In this context, faceless conversation takes on an added dimension of importance. Both strengths and weaknesses, as conveyed by voice, are magnified through the phone. Your voice personifies everything about you.
Before the Telephonic Interview :
If you're currently employed, arrange for a phone interview in the evening rather than during the workday. Confidentiality and discretion may be at risk if you interview during working hours; you never know who might barge into your office unannounced or overhear something by accident. In the privacy of your home, you can be more at ease and in control of your surroundings. You should always make sure you will not be interrupted.
Before the actual interview, it will help to know the topics to be covered, objectives to attain and the basic information regarding the position to be discussed.
It's also advisable to prepare for possible scenarios that might unfold. Hypothesize a bit; suppose the interviewer asks questions that make you feel uncomfortable.  Answer these and any questions as briefly and directly as possible without being negative. Offer a positive "mini story" about yourself and your accomplishments.
The worst case scenario would be that the interviewer would not call at the agreed time. In this case do not call the interviewer, call your recruiter so that he/she can investigate the situation and get back to you with another interview date and time.

What shouldn't you do when interviewing? Here are the top ten interview mistakes, blunders, and errors a candidate for employment can make.

No.1 Arriving Late

Don't give a weak first impression even before the start of the interview. Lateness shows lack of respect and poor time management skills. Make sure to show up 10-15 minutes in advance and notify a receptionist upon your arrival. Getting to your interview early will allow you to familiarize yourself with a foreign environment, and if you’re lucky, the waiting room may even have magazines from this decade.

No.2 Lying

Although it's tempting, it doesn't work. Be yourself and be honest! Don't pretend to understand a question or train of thought if you don't. The interviewer will pick up on this. If you don't know an answer, say so. Relax and be yourself.

No.3 Dress Wrong

Candidates make an impression on the interviewer literally within seconds after meeting him/her. You want to be sure that you make the best impression possible. Make sure your hair is cleaned, combed and worn in a professional manner. Your teeth should be brushed, and you should wear a deodorant with a mild scent. Arrive several minutes early for the interview, so you can take time to check your appearance in the restroom before the interview.

No.4 Criticising your past boss or coworkers

Even if you can’t stand your former boss, a job interview is not the time to "trash talk" or complain about your former employer. Avoid any negative references to your former boss. If you were laid off or fired from a previous position, be prepared to give a simple explanation that puts a positive spin on what happened. 
Interviewers are interested more in how you overcome these challenges. If there is something you need to express that is negative, say it in positive way.

No.5 Not being prepared

There is no excuse with today’s technology to go into an interview without doing basic research on the company interviewing you, their executives, products, customers, and competitors.
Re-read the relevant version of your CV and the job advert, just before the interview. You'd be surprised how many people can't remember what they wrote on their CV. You also should prepare answers on the most common interview questions such as, “What are you strengths and weaknesses? Where do you see yourself in ten years? What can you bring to the company that nobody else can? What brought you to this part of your career?” You will be more than likely asked these questions.

No.6 Asking about Salary too early

Don’t ask about salary at a job interview. Wait for the interviewer to bring up these issues. The interviewer will inevitably tell you what salary and benefits come with the job. There are so many people looking for jobs, so if the company sees you as someone who just wants the money and does not necessarily care about the job, it will work against you in the long run.

No.7 Saying Too Much

There is nothing much worse than interviewing someone who goes on and on and on... The interviewer really doesn't need to know your whole life story. Keep your answers succinct, to-the-point and focused and don't ramble - simply answer the question.
Although your interviewer will be interested in hearing about your past accomplishments and aspirations, they probably don’t need to hear about your bearded lady fetish or the fact that you experience a burning sensation every time you pee.

No.8 Checking the time

Be careful not to glance at your watch or the wall clock in the middle of your interview. Perhaps you should take off your watch prior to the interview so that you have no chance of accidentally looking at your wrist.

No.9 Not asking meaningful questions

Interviewers are unimpressed when they ask the candidate if they have any questions and the candidate does not! Prepare at least 3 or 4 questions in advance to ask the interviewer. Interviews are an exchange of information, and having no questions indicates that you are not sufficiently interested and have not thought much about the position.
The more research you have done about the company, the more relevant your questions will be.

No.10 Not following up after the interview

Calling or sending a note after the interview is your way of showing your appreciation. It is a direct way of telling the company that you are truly motivated and want this job.


College Interview Etiquette

The concept of a “college interview” can be nerve-racking for students and parents alike.  Although the interview experience varies from school to school, in general these conversations provide the admissions office with a chance to get to know a student.  Interviews also give students the opportunity to ask their questions and to get an insider’s perspective on a particular college community.
Here are some tips for effective and less stressful interviews:

Before the Interview

  • Feel free to ask the university about the expected dress code.  Even if you are told to dress “casual,” dress appropriately and, if in doubt about your outfit, dress on the conservative side.
  • Find out where to meet your interviewer.
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes ahead of your scheduled interview time.
  • A great way to feel more confident during the interview is to have a few questions prepared ahead of time; feel free to write these questions down and bring them with you into the interview.

During the Interview

  • Know yourself!  If you are an academic explorer who is undecided about a particular major, be ready to discuss favorite courses, teachers, and other areas of academic interest.  It is also fair game to talk about your extracurricular involvements (clubs, sports, part-time work, family responsibilities) and your other interests (favorite books, movies, other hobbies, travel experiences).  
  • Remain positive, energetic, and conversational throughout the interview.  The interview begins when you are first greeted by your interviewer … not when you sit down to talk.
  • If asked, be able to articulate why this particular institution might be a good match for you.  Consider what you want in a university; size, location, specific academic programs, faculty-student relationships, research opportunities, study abroad options, and the campus community all are important factors.
  • After the Interview

    • Follow up with and e-mail or handwritten note, thanking the interviewer for his or her time.  Mention what you enjoyed about your visit and the school.

    Avoid

    • One-word or yes/no responses.
    • Slang or profanity
    • Chewing gum
    • Stretching the truth.  It is always good to be honest about the things that you do.  You come across best when you discuss topics with which you are familiar and about which you are passionate.
    Just remember to be friendly, talk about what you enjoy, and learn as much as you can about the institution.

10 Reasons Why You're Not Getting Interviews


No matter how strong your skills or experience are, you won't land a new job without first securing an interview with a prospective employer. Job seekers often consider this step of the hiring process the most difficult -- and perplexing. 1. You only focus on the Googles of the world.

They make up the vast majority of businesses in the United States and sometimes have trouble locating qualified candidates. If Google is your dream employer, don't give up the good fight, but also keep your eyes and ears open to other opportunities.

2. You don't follow directions.

Each company has a different procedure it asks applicants to follow for submitting employment applications. Some ask that you use a form on their Web sites while others prefer traditional phone calls or faxes. Make sure you understand what the prospective employer seeks by carefully reading the job listing. Then, follow the directions to the letter. If you don't, your application may never reach the hiring manager.

3. You need to revamp your resume.

Sending out the same cover letter and resume to all companies isn't likely to capture the attention of prospective employers. Hiring managers want to know why you're a good match for their specific business needs. So take the time to research employers and customize your job search materials by explaining why you're interested in a particular position and how you could make a contribution to the company.

4. Your cover letter isn't enticing.

Think of your cover letter as an appetizer that convinces the hiring manager your resume, the main course, is worth sampling. The best cover letters take select details from the resume and expand upon them, explaining in depth how your talents and experience can benefit the prospective employer.

5. You don't reference keywords.

Companies that receive a high volume of resume often use scanning software that looks for certain keywords to determine which candidates to call for interviews. More often than not, keywords come directly from the job description. Terms such as "Microsoft Office," "accounts payable and receivable" and "Cisco Certified Network Administrator" are examples. As much as possible, ensure your resume and cover letter contain keywords.

6. Your application materials aren't perfect.

Submitting an application that contains typos and grammatical goofs is perhaps the quickest way to foil your chances of securing an interview. In fact, 84 percent of executives polled in a recent survey by our company said it takes just one or two errors to remove a candidate from consideration. The reason: These types of mistakes show a lack of professionalism and attention to detail. Make sure to carefully proofread your resume prior to submitting it and ask a friend or family member to do the same.

7. You don't know who to send your resume to.

Though it's fine to start your cover letter with the generic salutation "To Whom It May Concern," hiring managers pay special attention to applications that are addressed directly to them. If the job advertisement doesn't include the hiring manager's name, call the company and speak to the receptionist or a member of the person's department. More often than not, you can obtain the information fairly easily if you're candid about your reason for wanting it.

8. You don't have an 'in' with the company.

Using the name of a common contact to make the connection between you and the hiring manager is by far the best way to ensure your cover letter and resume get optimal attention. So, keep in touch with members of your professional network; you never know who has a contact at the company you hope to work for.

9. You don't follow up.

One way to improve the odds a hiring manager gives consideration to your resume is to follow up with him or her. According to a survey by our company, 86 percent of executives said job seekers should contact a hiring manager within two weeks of sending a resume and cover letter. Often a brief phone call or e-mail reasserting your interest in the position and strong qualifications is enough.

10. You're not as qualified as you think.

The bottom line may be that you're simply not as perfect for the job as you think. Before submitting your resume, take a close look at the job description and compare your skills and experience with those required for the position. If a job calls for five years of retail management experience, and you have only two, you might not be as qualified as other applicants. While sometimes it's possible to make up for skills gaps if you excel in other areas, hiring managers frequently have specific criteria in mind, and they use it to determine whom they call for interviews.No matter how strong your skills or experience are, you won't land a new job without first securing an interview with a prospective employer. Interview Tips to help you get the Job

1.       Try to appear your best at the Interview.  Your appearance should convey that you have taken the interview seriously.   Do not try to turn up in the interview in a manner that does not suit you.   Some basics in grooming will help.

2.       Know about the company.   You should learn as much as you can about the company.  A good place to start is the company's website.  If you have been referred through a friend also have a frank discussion with him or her.  Also, do a google search  on the company to understand what others are saying about the company.

3.       Answer clearly and directly.  Spell out your ideas as clearly as you can.  Also try to substantiate your ideas with examples.  Don't be overly wordy and try to keep your answers to the point.  Do not try to deviate too much from the question.

4.       Do not be argumentative.  Present your viewpoint and be professional.  If you do not agree with something the Interviewer has said do not spurn it as invalid.  Learn to understand their point of view even if it clashed with your own.  This does not mean that you need to accept their point of view.

5.       Be prepared with questions for the Interviewer.  Most interviewers will give you a chance to ask questions.  Use this opportunity to show your knowledge and interest in the company.  Also this is a good opportunity to clear any doubts that you have.

6.       Address the Interviewer politely.  It is always polite to refer to the Interviewer as SIR or Maam.  You can also address them their Surname (Mr. XXX or Mrs. XXX).  Do not use terms such as Honey, Girl, Dude, Yaar etc.

7.       Be Confident.  Be confident, you have prepared well and this should show in your confidence level in the interview.

  • The shoulder shrug is also a good example of a universal gesture that is used to show that a person does not know or understand what you are talking about. It is a multiple gesture that has three main parts: exposed palms, hunched shoulders and raised brow.

In some countries, such as Greece, its main meaning is ‘get stuffed’.

Palm Positions
  • Submissive Palm Position - The palm facing up is used as a submissive, non-threatening gesture, reminiscent of the pleading gesture of a street beggar. The person being asked to move the box will not feel that the request is given with pressure and, in a normal superior/subordinate situation, will not feel threatened by the request.
  • Dominant Palm Position - When the palm is turned to face downwards, you will have immediate authority. The person to whom you have directed the request feels that he has been given an order to remove the box and may feel antagonistic towards you, depending on your relationship with him. For example, if the person to whom you gave the request was a co-worker of equal status, he could reject your palm-down request and would be more likely to carry out your wish if you had used the palm-up position. If the person to whom you give the request is your subordinate, the palm-down gesture is acceptable, as you have the authority to use it.
  • Aggressive Palm Position - The palm is closed into a fist and the pointed finger becomes a symbolic club with which the speaker figuratively beats his listener into submission. The pointed finger is one of the most irritating gestures that a person can use while speaking, particularly when it beats time to the speaker’s words. If you are an habitual finger-pointer, try practising the palm-up and palm-down positions and you will find that you create a more relaxed attitude and have a more positive effect on other people.

  • Glove Handshake - The glove handshake is sometimes called the politician’s handshake. The initiator tries to give the receiver the impression that he is trustworthy and honest, but when this technique is used on a person he has just met, it has the reverse effect. The receiver feels suspicious and cautious about the initiator’s intentions. The glove should only be used with people to whom the initiator is well-known.

  • The intention of the double-handed handshake is to show sincerity, trust or depth of feeling towards the receiver. Two significant elements should be noticed. Firstly, the left hand is used to communicate the extra feeling that the initiator wishes to transmit and its extent is related to the distance that the initiator’s left hand is moved up the receiver’s right arm.
  • Elbow Grasp - The elbow grasp, transmits more feeling than the wrist hold, and the shoulder hold.
  • In general, the wrist hold and the elbow grasp are acceptable only between close friends or relatives and in these cases, the initiator’s left hand penetrates only the receiver’s intimate zone.

  • The shoulder hold and the upper arm grip enter the receiver’s close intimate zone and may involve actual body contact. They should be used only between people who experience a close emotional bond at the time of the handshake.

  • Rubbing the palms together - Rubbing the palms together is a way in which people non-verbally communicate positive expectation.

  • The person would be more difficult to handle when the hands are held high, than he would be with the person whom hands resting on the desk position. Like all negative gestures, some action needs to be taken to unlock the person’s fingers to expose the palms and the front of the body, or the hostile attitude will remain.

People who are confident, superior types or who use minimal or restricted body gestures often use this gesture, and, by doing so, they signal their confident attitude. It is frequently used in superior/subordinate interaction and that it can be an isolated gesture which indicates a confident or 'know-it-all' attitude. Managers often use this gesture position when giving instructions or advice to subordinates and it is particularly common among accountants, lawyers, managers and the like. The gesture has two versions,
  • The Raised Steeple - The position is normally taken when the steepler is giving his opinions or ideas and is doing the talking.
  • The Lowered Steeple - The position is normally used when the steepler is listening rather than speaking.

Gripping Hands, Arms and Wrists

  • Superiority/Confidence Gesture - Several prominent male members of the British Royal Family are noted for their habit of walking with their head up, chin out and one palm gripping the other hand behind the back. Not only does British Royalty use this gesture; it is common among Royalty of many countries. On the local scene, the gesture is used by the policeman patrolling his beat, the headmaster of the local school when he is walking through the school yard, senior military personnel and others in a position of authority.
  • Hand-Gripping-Wrist Gesture - which is a signal of frustration and an attempt at self-control. In this ase one hand grips the other wrist or arm very tightly as if it is an attempt by one arm to prevent the other from striking out.
  • Upper Arm Grip Gesture - The further the hand is moved up the back, the more angry the person has become. He is showing a greater attempt at self-control than the man in Hand-Gripping-Wrist Gesture man, because the hand is gripping the upper arm, not just the wrist. It is this type of gesture that has given rise to such expressions as, 'Get a good grip on yourself'.

The thumbs denote strength of character and ego and the non-verbal use of thumbs agrees with this. They are used to display dominance, superiority or even aggression; thumb gestures are secondary gestures, a supportive part of a gesture cluster. Thumb displays are positive signals, often used in the typical pose of the 'cool' manager who uses them in the presence of subordinates.
  • Dominant Male - Arms folded with thumbs pointing upwards is another popular thumb gesture position. This is a double signal, being that of a defensive or negative attitude, (folded arms) plus a superior attitude (displayed by the thumbs). The person using this double gesture usually gesticulates with his or her thumbs, and rocking on the balls of the feet when standing is common.

1. What is the difference between a constructor and a method?
A constructor is a member function of a class that is used to create objects of that class. It has the same name as the class itself, has no return type, and is invoked using the new operator.
A method is an ordinary member function of a class. It has its own name, a return type (which may be void), and is invoked using the dot operator.

2. What is the purpose of garbage collection in Java, and when is it used?
The purpose of garbage collection is to identify and discard objects that are no longer needed by a program so that their resources can be reclaimed and reused.
A Java object is subject to garbage collection when it becomes unreachable to the program in which it is used.

3. Describe synchronization in respect to multithreading.
With respect to multithreading, synchronization is the capability to control the access of multiple threads to shared resources.
Without synchonization, it is possible for one thread to modify a shared variable while another thread is in the process of using or updating same shared variable. This usually leads to significant errors.

4. What is an abstract class?
Abstract class must be extended/subclassed (to be useful). It serves as a template. A class that is abstract may not be instantiated (ie. you may not call its constructor), abstract class may contain static data.
Any class with an abstract method is automatically abstract itself, and must be declared as such. A class may be declared abstract even if it has no abstract methods. This prevents it from being instantiated.

5. What is the difference between an Interface and an Abstract class?
An abstract class can have instance methods that implement a default behavior. An Interface can only declare constants and instance methods, but cannot implement default behavior and all methods are implicitly abstract.
An interface has all public members and no implementation. An abstract class is a class which may have the usual flavors of class members (private, protected, etc.), but has some abstract methods.

6. Explain different way of using thread?
The thread could be implemented by using runnable interface or by inheriting from the Thread class. The former is more advantageous, 'cause when you are going for multiple inheritance, the only interface can help.

 1. What is a local block?
A local block is any portion of a C program that is enclosed by the left brace ({) and the right brace (}). A C function contains left and right braces, and therefore anything between the two braces is contained in a local block. An if statement or a switch statement can also contain braces, so the portion of code between these two braces would be considered a local block.
Additionally, you might want to create your own local block without the aid of a C function or keyword construct. This is perfectly legal. Variables can be declared within local blocks, but they must be declared only at the beginning of a local block. Variables declared in this manner are visible only within the local block. Duplicate variable names declared within a local block take precedence over variables with the same name declared outside the local block. Here is an example of a program that uses local blocks:

Notice that as each test_var was defined, it took precedence over the previously defined test_var. Also notice that when the if statement local block had ended, the program had reentered the scope of the original test_var, and its value was 10.

2. Should variables be stored in local blocks?
The use of local blocks for storing variables is unusual and therefore should be avoided, with only rare exceptions. One of these exceptions would be for debugging purposes, when you might want to declare a local instance of a global variable to test within your function. You also might want to use a local block when you want to make your program more readable in the current context.
Sometimes having the variable declared closer to where it is used makes your program more readable. However, well-written programs usually do not have to resort to declaring variables in this manner, and you should avoid using local blocks.

3. When is a switch statement better than multiple if statements?
A switch statement is generally best to use when you have more than two conditional expressions based on a single variable of numeric type. For instance, rather than the code

else if (x == 2)
     printf("x is equal to two.\n");
else if (x == 3)
     printf("x is equal to three.\n");
else
     printf("x is not equal to one, two, or three.\n");

the following code is easier to read and maintain:

switch (x)

     case 1:   printf("x is equal to one.\n");
                    break;
     case 2:   printf("x is equal to two.\n");
                    break;
     case 3:   printf("x is equal to three.\n");
                    break;
     default:  printf("x is not equal to one, two, or three.\n");
                    break;
}

Notice that for this method to work, the conditional expression must be based on a variable of numeric type in order to use the switch statement. Also, the conditional expression must be based on a single variable. For instance, even though the following if statement contains more than two conditions, it is not a candidate for using a switch statement because it is based on string comparisons and not numeric comparisons:

4. Is a default case necessary in a switch statement?
No, but it is not a bad idea to put default statements in switch statements for error- or logic-checking purposes. For instance, the following switch statement is perfectly normal:

     case 'N':
     case 'n': printf("You answered NO!\n");
               break;
}

Consider, however, what would happen if an unknown character code were passed to this switch statement. The program would not print anything. It would be a good idea, therefore, to insert a default case where this condition would be taken care of:

     default:  printf("Unknown response: %d\n", char_code);
               break;
...

Additionally, default cases come in handy for logic checking. For instance, if your switch statement handled a fixed number of conditions and you considered any value outside those conditions to be a logic error, you could insert a default case which would flag that condition. Consider the following example:

1. Explain the concept of Reentrancy?
It is a useful, memory-saving technique for multiprogrammed timesharing systems. A Reentrant Procedure is one in which multiple users can share a single copy of a program during the same period. Reentrancy has 2 key aspects: The program code cannot modify itself, and the local data for each user process must be stored separately. Thus, the permanent part is the code, and the temporary part is the pointer back to the calling program and local variables used by that program. Each execution instance is called activation. It executes the code in the permanent part, but has its own copy of local variables/parameters.

2. Explain Belady's Anomaly?
Also called FIFO anomaly. Usually, on increasing the number of frames allocated to a process virtual memory, the process execution is faster, because fewer page faults occur. Sometimes, the reverse happens, i.e., the execution time increases even when more frames are allocated to the process. This is Belady's Anomaly. This is true for certain page reference patterns.
3. What is a binary semaphore? What is its use?
A binary semaphore is one, which takes only 0 and 1 as values. They are used to implement mutual exclusion and synchronize concurrent processes.
4. What is thrashing?
It is a phenomenon in virtual memory schemes when the processor spends most of its time swapping pages, rather than executing instructions. This is due to an inordinate number of page faults.
5. List the Coffman's conditions that lead to a deadlock.
  1. Mutual Exclusion: Only one process may use a critical resource at a time.
  2. Hold & Wait: A process may be allocated some resources while waiting for others.
  3. No Pre-emption: No resource can be forcible removed from a process holding it.
  4. Circular Wait: A closed chain of processes exist such that each process holds at least one resource needed by another process in the chain.
6. What are short, long and medium-term scheduling?
Long term scheduler determines which programs are admitted to the system for processing. It controls the degree of multiprogramming. Once admitted, a job becomes a process.
Medium term scheduling is part of the swapping function. This relates to processes that are in a blocked or suspended state. They are swapped out of real-memory until they are ready to execute. The swapping-in decision is based on memory-management criteria.
Short term scheduler, also know as a dispatcher executes most frequently, and makes the finest-grained decision of which process should execute next. This scheduler is invoked whenever an event occurs. It may lead to interruption of one process by preemption.
UNIX File Management - Interview Questions and Answers
1. How are devices represented in UNIX?
All devices are represented by files called special files that are located in /dev directory. Thus, device files and other files are named and accessed in the same way. A 'regular file' is just an ordinary data file in the disk. A 'block special file' represents a device with characteristics similar to a disk (data transfer in terms of blocks). A 'character special file' represents a device with characteristics similar to a keyboard (data transfer is by stream of bits in sequential order).
2. What is 'inode'?
All UNIX files have its description stored in a structure called 'inode'. The inode contains info about the file-size, its location, time of last access, time of last modification, permission and so on. Directories are also represented as files and have an associated inode. In addition to descriptions about the file, the inode contains pointers to the data blocks of the file. If the file is large, inode has indirect pointer to a block of pointers to additional data blocks (this further aggregates for larger files). A block is typically 8k.
Inode consists of the following fields:
  1. File owner identifier
  2. File type
  3. File access permissions
  4. File access times
  5. Number of links
  6. File size
  7. Location of the file data

3. Brief about the directory representation in UNIX.
A Unix directory is a file containing a correspondence between filenames and inodes. A directory is a special file that the kernel maintains. Only kernel modifies directories, but processes can read directories. The contents of a directory are a list of filename and inode number pairs. When new directories are created, kernel makes two entries named '.' (refers to the directory itself) and '..' (refers to parent directory). System call for creating directory is mkdir (pathname, mode).
4. What are the Unix system calls for I/O?
  1. open(pathname,flag,mode) - open file
  2. creat(pathname,mode) - create file
  3. close(filedes) - close an open file
  4. read(filedes,buffer,bytes) - read data from an open file
  5. write(filedes,buffer,bytes) - write data to an open file
  6. lseek(filedes,offset,from) - position an open file
  7. dup(filedes) - duplicate an existing file descriptor
  8. dup2(oldfd,newfd) - duplicate to a desired file descriptor
  9. fcntl(filedes,cmd,arg) - change properties of an open file
  10. ioctl(filedes,request,arg) - change the behaviour of an open file
  11. The difference between fcntl anf ioctl is that the former is intended for any open file, while the latter is for device-specific operations.
5. How do you change File Access Permissions?
Every file has following attributes:
  1. owner's user ID ( 16 bit integer )
  2. owner's group ID ( 16 bit integer )
  3. File access mode word
(r w x) - (r w x) - (r w x) (user permission) - (group permission) - (others permission) To change the access mode, we use chmod(filename,mode).

 I am pleased to introduce myself before you. Hi, I am Ashvitha from Villupuram. I pursued my Bachelor of Degree in Information Technology from Anna university, Chennai. I did my schooling at Achariya Siksha Mandir, Pondicherry. I secured 92%.
 I am strong enough if I am with my friends and family. I can easily manage things at hard situation. I am tolerable and my strength is capable of understanding things easy. I am very eager in learning new things and would like to update myself.
 My hobbies are of listening music and watching cartoons. And my interests are playing chess, volleyball and surfing net. I am adamant in getting what I desired and I can't accept my failure. However I am trying to get rid off this habit slowly. About my family, we are five in number.
 My father is having a ginning mill of his own and my mother is a house maker.
 My elder sister is a fashion designer and my younger brother is doing engineering.
 I am expertise in C, C++, JAVA, ORACLE. I attended many Symposium and won prizes on debugging and programming.
 I did several paper presentation and projects on Cloud Computing. My aim is to achieve organizational goal which utilizes my skills and abilities.
 My short term goal is to get placed in reputed companies like yours and my long term goal is to start up a business of my own.

The interviewer may end up asking you technical questions.

As I understand your needs, you are looking for someone who can develop a software. I have spent a lot of time in learning programming. I believe that I know the right methods and techniques in programming as well as any person can in the industry.
